Eagle with a book, symbol of saint John the Evangelist; Evangelist symbol; head of monster; four acanthus leaves.
Randall 1985: Italian (?), 13th century. Stylistically related to Sicilian ivories. Close to British Museum, Dalton 75.

Traces within the volute and on the eagle. Inscription on the book: 'IONES/EVANG' or 'IOHES/EVANG'.
Reverse
Carved in the round.
Object Condition
The base of the volute and the upper part of the shaft are carved with ovals originally filled with glass paste (largely missing).
Comments
The eyes of the eagle and dragon inlaid with glass.
