Seated Virgin and Child; Christ standing on the Virgin's left knee; Child pulling the front of the Virgin's veil; Christ in long robe; open book.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy: red (Virgin's veil; flowers of the throne), green (leaves).

Reverse
Carved in the round. Back of the ivory throne decorated with flowers in high relief.

Object Condition
Missing: arms of Christ and lower part of the Virgin's robe (replaced).
Hole in the upper part of the head of the Virgin for attachment of a metal crown now missing.

Comments
Hexagonal base decorated with twelve roundels enclosing quatrefoils with tracery and champlevé enamel coming from a reliquary of saint Mary Magdalene, as is indicated by the inscription along the upper cornice: 'OV. VESEL. O. CESTE. IMAGE. TIENT. A. UNE. DENT. ET. DE. HOS. LA. BENOITE. MARIE. MAGDALEINE'.

Provenance
Collection of Prince Petr Soltykoff (b. c. 1801, d. 1889): sold, Paris, Drouot, 8-10, 15-17, 22-24, 29 April and 1 May 1861, lot 179). Carrand collection: bequeathed by Louis Carrand (d. 1888) to the Museo del Bargello in 1888.
