Ivory

Height: 92mm
Width: 102mm

Crucifixion, with jet of blood striking the Virgin's chest (broken); soldiers fighting for Christ's seamless garment; saint John the Evangelist and soldier in armour with spear on horseback (possibly Longinus).
Two angels in the spandrels.

Randall 1985 and Museum's opinion 2010: Italy, N. (Venice?), c. 1400.

Hinges
Traces of two missing hinges on the left side.

Polychromy - Gilding
Extensive traces of gilding in the hair, beards, wings of the angels, loincloth of Christ, harness of the horse, background decorated with pattern of stars, 'INRI' inscription on either side of the cross.

Object Condition
Two holes in the upper part of the panel.
Missing: part of the jet of blood.

Bought by Henry Walters before 1931; Walters Art Museum, 1931, by bequest.
