Traces of polychromy and gilding: green, red, gold (architectural details).

Reverse
Flat and smooth.

Object Condition
Vertical crack between the first and the second gable.
Hole in the upper part of the panel (probably for later hanging).

Comments
The function of this piece is uncertain, as the back is not recessed as in the case of a writing tablet.

Provenance
Museum founded in 1754 to house the collections of the Dukes of Braunschweig (this piece is mentioned in Inventory H 32 (finished ca. 1798), p. 260, no. 623: 'Dito [Ein kleines Basrelief]; die Steingung eines Märtyrers. Ist alte gothische Arbeit und hat einen Rahm wie No. 620. [In einem schwarzen Rahment mit Leisten von Taxilsholze].').
