Randall 1993: North Italian (Savoy?), 1390-1410. The shape and painted ornament indicate that a Sicilian model was being imitated.

Polychromy - Gilding
Painted in red, brown and green. Pale brown used instead of gold for the lettering.
Reverse
Smooth.
Object Condition
Small loss at the bottom right front corner. Cracks.
Missing: one of the ivory studs; some squares on the bottom.
The ivory hasp is broken.
Comments
Ivory plaques attached to a wood core with ivory pins. The clasp is made of ivory. Two studs at the top for a handle. Ivory bands used to reinforce corners.

Acquired by Raymond Pitcairn in 1927.
