Ivory;gilt bronze (medieval and later fittings)

Height: 1543mm

Dragon head (at the base of the volute).
Painted inscription on the volute: 'AVE MARIA [G]RA[TI]A PLE[NA]'; 'SALUTE SANCTA LUC[I]A [MISE[RICORD[IA]'.

Randall 1993 and Museum's opinion 2011: Italian, 14th century and German, 15th century.

Polychromy - Gilding
Extensive traces of gilding and polychromy: inscription and foliated decoration.

Reverse
Carved in the round.

Object Condition
Missing: figure or ornament in the centre of the volute; terminal of the volute (later replacement).

Comments
The gilt bronze mounts on the shaft date to the 16th or 17th century.

Provenance
Leopold Blumka (d. 1973), New York (by 1973): given to the Institute through Mrs. Ruth Blumka in 1974.
