Ivory

Height: 102mm (diameter)

Attack on the Castle of Love; knights in armour assaulting the castle; lady crowning a knight on horseback; ladies throwing roses on the attackers; shields; lovers; knights in armour fighting with swords; knight aiming his bow and arrow (arrow tipped with a rose) at two figures; horses; portcullis.
Corner terminals: four crouching monsters.

Reverse
Back turned with a depression for (missing) mirror. Modern Bonnat inscriptions: 'B417' in red and '10' in black.

Object Condition
Two bore holes in the lower part of the piece.

Comments
This mirror case is nearly identical to another one in the British Museum (1888,0208.1 (Dalton 381)).

Provenance
Bouvier collection, Amiens (though absent from the Bouvier sale in 1873). Facle or Fucle (?) collection. Roussel collection. Collection of Michel Boy (b. 1845), Paris. Collection of Léon Bonnat (b. 1833, d. 1922), by 1902: his bequest in 1922.
Note: the order of the provenance has not been checked.
