Ivory;bone (later base, probably Scandinavian, 18th century);metal (crown).

Height: 110mm

Seated Virgin and Child; Christ in long robe; Christ standing on the Virgin's left knee; Child pulling the front of the Virgin's veil; original crown.

Randall 1985 and Museum's opinion 2010: Flanders or France, N., 4th quarter of the 14th century.

Reverse
Plaque from the lower inner curve of a tusk; back pierced as a window.

Object Condition
Missing: left arm of Christ.
Two later holes in the Virgin's robe for attachment to the bone base.

Provenance
Collection of Alfred André, restorer of art works, Paris: his sale, Paris, 23-24 April 1920, lot 256 to Léon Gruel; bought from Léon Gruel by Henry Walters in Paris in 1922; Walters Art Museum, 1931, by bequest.
