Ivory

Height: 117mm
Width: 73mm
Depth: 4-8mm

Virgin in the sun; crescent moon; Virgin as the Apocalyptic woman; crescent moon with a face; crown.
Crosshatched background; roped border; foliated decoration in the lower corners.

Koechlin 1924: France, end of the 15th century or early 16th century.
Museum's opinion 2013: 16th century (?).


Attribution
Unknown

Reverse
Curved. The handle which was originally set into a chamfered slot in the back has been lost. Blue and white label with ink inscription: 'n. 1153 [?]'.

Object Condition
Missing: triangular portion of the pax at the top left and part of the upper right side.
Central hole in the upper part of the piece and hole in each of the lower corners.

Provenance
In the collection assembled by Alexandre Le Grand for the museum before 1888. Described in a pre-1888 handwritten inventory kept at the museum as: 'Instrument de Paix: Vierge et Enfant Jésus, travail italien. XIIe siècle.' (p. 6 or 7; two items mentioned with the same description).
