Comments
The panel now decorates the upper cover of a 14th-century manuscript prayerbook whose miniatures are attributed to the workshop of Jean Pucelle, active in Paris in the mid 14th century. The binding of blind-stamped brown calf skin dates from a later period and is enclosed in a 19th-century green leather case signed Gruel (Gruel was a family of bookbinders active in Paris from 1832 but this case probably dates from the time of the founder's grandson, Léon) (information drawn from unpublished catalogue by Charlotte Lacaze).
Provenance
Comites Latentes collection (acquired in 1968); on deposit at the Bibliothèque de Genève since 1977.
