Hinges
Traces of two missing hinges on either side (probably originally ring hinges).
Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of gilding and polychromy: gold (along the hems; crown; hair); red (inside the Virgin's veil), green (architectural details).
Reverse
Flat and smooth, with four filled holes where the hinges would have been.
Object Condition
Missing: upper part of the niche (replaced).
Two holes in the underside of the piece. Yellow label with inscription: 'Astor of Hever'.
Provenance
In Orléans in 1876 (probably collection of Miss Fabre (see 1876 catalogue)). Major Astor collection, at Hever Castle (Kent): Sotheby's, London, Hever Castle sale, 6 May 1983, lot 231. Bequest of Mr. and Mrs. Donald F. Rowe, Sr. to the Museum in January 1988.
