Extensive polychromy and gilding: gold, red and black (foliated decoration, painted inscription, four unidentified saints around the knop, interlace), red (dragon's tongue and ears). Unidentified coat of arms.
Reverse
Carved on both sides.
Object Condition
Missing: centre piece of the crozier (replaced with a later scene of the Annunciation).
Comments
The Annunciation scene in the volute is a 17th-century addition, according to Carli 1979.
Provenance
Unidentified coat of arms. Said to have belonged to the archbishops of Siena but, according to Carli 1979, belonged to the abbots of San Galgano.
