Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy: hair, hems, lining of the Virgin's cloak.
Reverse
Flat with crosshatching.
Object Condition
Missing: right ear and tail of the ass.
The veil of the Virgin is broken in one place. Two holes at the back.
Comments
A third figure must have been following the ass, as the tip of a foot is visible behind the ass to the left. The base is uneven so that the piece needs support to stand (traces of glue on the bottom). This piece was part of a larger ensemble, probably depicting episodes from the Life of Christ, set in an architectural framework in a different material (possibly in metal).
Provenance
Collection of Michel Meyer. Private collection, London: bought from Guy Ladrière, 17 May 2010.
