Ivory

Height: 97mm
Width: 67mm

Saint Peter holding a key; enthroned saint Catherine of Alexandria with broken wheel and martyr's palm; saint Paul holding a sword; throne; crown.
Tracery; pierced trefoils and quatrefoils; pinnacles.

Leeuwenberg 1969: France (?), last quarter of the 18th century to 1st half of the 19th century.
Museum's opinion 2010: 19th century.

Master of the Agrafe Forgeries (Leeuwenberg 1969)

Reverse
At the back, traces of verdigris from a metal mount which originally secured it to a plain ivory background (information from Walters old files).

Provenance
Collection of the Very Reverend Dr Daniel Rock (b. 1799, d. 1871). Charles Stein collection, Paris; Sir Thomas Gibson-Carmichael collection: sold, Christie's, London, 12 may 1902, lot 152 (with ill.), to Harding. Bought from Harding by Henry Walters in New York in February 1903; Walters Art Museum, 1931, by bequest.
