Reverse
Smooth, with longer edges chamfered. Crosshatching on a vertical strip down the middle, corresponding to two holes, certainly to secure a handle. Trace of ivory repair to one of the pinnacles.
Ink inscription: 'Valeria in Sitten' (see Provenance field).
Object Condition
Missing: large piece removed at the foot of the cross; hands of both angels; head of the right hand side angel, face on the angel to the left; left forearm and hand of the Virgin; pinnacle on either side of the gable (two holes in the upper left part of the piece, presumably to fix a replacement pinnacle, a fragment of which remains, visible from the back) and possibly foliated decoration at the apex of the gable.
Two central holes, presumably to attach a handle to the back of the piece.
Provenance
From the Convent of Notre-Dame de Valère, Sion (Valais); acquired from the Antiquarian Society (Antiquarische Gesellschaft) in Zurich.
