Attribution
Atelier of the Kremsmünster Diptych
Hinges
Traces of missing hinges on either side.
Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of gilding and polychromy
Reverse
Flat and smooth.
Crosshatching on the underside of the panel, presumably for attachment to a base.
Engraved inscription: 'Cte de Reiset'.
Object Condition
The piece has been cut out and probably originally formed the centre part of a winged polyptych (tabernacle).
The upper part of the plaque has been restored.
Pierced with holes, some of which certainly corresponded to original hinges.
Provenance
Possibly from the collection of the Count of Reiset (Comte de Reiset)(suggestion based on the inscription on the back). Collection of Joseph Brummer, New York: sale, 20-23 April 1949 (Part I), lot 649. Sotheby's, New York, 31 May 1990, lot 107; Jan Dirven, art dealer, Antwerp; purchased in 1991 by the museum thanks to the Fonds Régional d'Acquisition pour les Musées.
