Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy (old but not original). Modern pigment applied to conceal repairs to head of Child and to flower.
Reverse
Uncarved. Back slighthly carved, showing the bark of the exterior of the tusk.
Object Condition
Missing: left end of throne, upper part of the Virgin's head; metal crown.
Large pin-hole has been plugged with ivory in the lower part of the drapery (information from old Walters files).
Comments
Style related to the Zwettl Virgin and Child (Koechlin 62), and the Toledo Cathedral Virgin and Child (Koechlin 107), both dating to the late 13th century (Randall 1985).
