Polychromy - Gilding
Extensive traces of gilding: hair, decorated patterns along the hems, architectural details.

Reverse
Flat and smooth. Traces of glue.

Object Condition
Hole above the head of the archangel. Hole plugged with ivory in the Virgin panel.

Comments
Inscription on the lower edge of the angel panel: 123-695.

Provenance
24 September 1818, recorded in the form of a pen and wash drawing among the papers of the antiquary Reverend John Skinner and noted as being in the collection of "an old man" in Ilchester, Somerset, who had found it when removing the wainscot from above the fireplace of an "ancient house" (see Rev. J. Skinner, 'A Week's Excursion from Camerton, along the Fosse, to Ilchester, Montacute, Yeovil, &c; from September 25th to October 3rd, 1813', Skinner Journals, XIX, Add MS 33657). Collection of Sir Julius Wernher (d. 1912), Bath House, London (bought in 1880 by him from the collection of a Mr. Moore, West Coker, Somerset, who had acquired it many years previously from someone in the neighbourhood)(1913 Bath House Inventory no. 695, p. 141; 1914 Wernher Inventory, no. 475, p. 98); Wernher collection, London (inv. no. 123-695): sale, Christie's, London, 5 July 2000, lot W59; Taylor Thomson collection (2000-2007); private collection, London (bought from Sam Fogg, 30 March 2007).
