Carved in the round. On the bottom, blue and white label with handwritten inscription: '1110'.
Object Condition
Missing: right hand of the Virgin, head and arms of Christ. Ivory very cracked.
Large drilled hole in the base. Two holes at the top and two in the back of the Virgin's head. One hole in Christ's back and one in the Virgin's veil to the left.
Provenance
Collection of Barthélemy Rey, Paris (at least 1914-1921; bought in Switzerland where it seemed to have been brought by a French nun fleeing the Revolution, according to Alexandre 1917): his sale, Paris, 11 May 1921, lot 22, pl. 20. Gift of the Friends of the Fitzwilliam Museum (see 29th Annual Report, 1937, p. 1, no. 1).
