Polychromy - Gilding
Polychromy and gilding: gold, red and black. Painted inscription along the volute: 'AVE MARIA GRACIA'. Painted foliated decoration.
Reverse
Carved in the round.
Object Condition
The acanthus leaves around the volute are modern.
Provenance
First recorded in the 1558 inventory of the Treasure (f. 20v), and subsequently in the 1723 and 1773 inventories (mentioned in the latter as dating from the time of Pabo (1279-1292), which can not be confirmed on stylistic grounds).
