Ivory

Height: 144mm
Width: 84mm
Depth: 8mm

Crucifixion; swooning Virgin supported by Holy Women; saint John the Evangelist and onlookers holding scrolls; onlookers with hands in the air; sun and moon; rugged cross; angels in the spandrels.
Five-lobed arch.

Randall 1985 and Museum's opinion 2010: 3rd quarter of the 14th century, German or Mosan.

Traces of two missing hinges on the left side.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of gilding: 'INRI' inscription on a scroll on the cross; traces of gilded roping along the borders.

Object Condition
Two central holes at the top (modern).

Comments
The left wing was sold in 2013 in Berlin (Berlin, Grisebach, 30 May 2013, lot 253). See related object.

Provenance
Collection of Georges Hoentschel (b. 1855, d. 1915), Paris: sale, Drouot, Paris, 14-15 April 1910, lot 13 (purchased by Goldschmidt). Bought by Henry Walters in Paris before 1931; Walters Art Museum, 1931, by bequest.
