Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of gilding and polychromy: painted arches on the throne; lining of the Virgin's cloak (see Cascio and Levy in Sandron 1993, p. 56 for more details).
Reverse
Flat with some scoring and crosshatching, especially at the back of the throne. Cavity in the back of the throne, possibly for a relic. Head carved in the round.
Object Condition
Missing: feet and right arm of the Virgin, head and left arm of Christ, vertical strip in the Virgin's dress at the front from the belt down (all later replacements); right corner of the throne at the back.
Crown and fingers on Christ's right hand chipped. Central hole at the back, slightly lower than the shoulders.

Collection of Alexander Petrovich Basilewski (b. 1829, d. 1899), Paris (acquired in 1865; represented in a watercolour by A. Lavezzari dated 1870 (Saint Petersburg, Dept of Western Art, no. 14230)); acquired by the Museum in 1885.
