Attribution
Unknown

Hinges
Traces of two missing hinges on the left side.

Reverse
Back of the ivory panel hidden by a wooded frame.
Three old labels with inscriptions: '2748', '1777' (possibly from auctions) and 'Oscott College'.

Object Condition
Worn.
Hole in each gable; central hole in the upper part of the panel; two holes in the lower part of the panel.
The panel has broken into two pieces causing a loss in the background to the right of the Virgin. The panel was probably framed then, to keep the pieces together.

Provenance
Possibly purchased for Oscott College or left to Oscott College by either Augustus Welby Pugin (b. 1812, d. 1852) or his benefactor, John Talbot, 16th Earl of Shrewsbury (b. 1791, d. 1852). Probably part of the ‘collection of miscellaneous ivory carvings depicting scenes from the gospels’ mentioned in the inventory drawn by Rev. William Greaney in 1880.
