Register 1: Crucifixion with the Virgin and saint John the Evangelist.
Register 2: Nativity and Annunciation to the Shepherds; musician shepherd holding bagpipes; swaddled Christ.
Pointed trefoils in the spandrels.
Museum's opinion 2015: France, 14th century.

Hinges
Traces of two missing hinges on the right side (the miters seem to have been filled with some substance).
Polychromy - Gilding
Extensive polychromy (later): frame, background, etc.
Reverse
Flat and smooth.
Object Condition
Parts seem to have been cut out:
- on the upper register: the faces of the Virgin, her right hand, the face of saint John the Evangelist, and the moon to the left.
- on the lower register: Joseph's right hand, sheep in the background; right hand of the Virgin and scroll held by the angel.
Lower border chipped.
Strong discolouration.
Provenance
Given by Miss Christian Clark in 1783 to the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (established in 1780); its collections passed into public ownership in 1858 as the original collections of the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland.
