The Gothic Ivories Project was launched in October 2008 and the initial three-year phase of the Project 2008-2011 was primarily funded through the generosity of Thomson Works of Art in memory of Ken Thomson, an enthusiastic collector of ivories.
Phase 2 (2011-2015) was funded in equal measure by Thomson Works of Art and The Ruddock Foundation for the Arts. The Project also received in 2012 a grant from the Audrey Love Foundation.
Over 5,000 pieces are now available online, illustrated with over 14,000 images: it is estimated that this represents about 90 per cent of the total number of surviving pieces as defined by the scope of the project (i.e. ivory carvings made in Western Europe from c. 1200-c. 1530 and neo-Gothic pieces).
However, more funding is needed to keep the entries up-to-date, keep up with objects appearing at auction houses, new publications, new acquisitions and maintain this resource so that it continues to be available to all and of the highest standard.
We are currently seeking funding to maintain the project beyond 2015.
